Tampa Elects First Openly Gay Mayor
Tampa has elected the first openly gay Mayor in the city’s history – 59-year-old former police chief, Jane Castor.
Castor, who spent 30 years with the Tampa Police Department, won in a landslide with 73 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election.
Castor called it “a new chapter in Tampa’s history” and says she “could not be more excited to be a part of it”. She follows in the footsteps of Lori Lightfoot, who was elected as Chicago’s first openly gay mayor earlier this month.
