As environmentalists continue the push to abolish plastic drinking straws, a British woman has been killed by an eco-friendly metal straw she bought to help save the planet.
Elena Struthers-Garner, 60, was reportedly drinking from a mason jar-style drinking glass with a screw-on lid, using a reusable metal straw. As she was walking through her kitchen, she tripped and fell on the 10-inch straw — causing it to pierce her left eye and enter her brain, according to USA Today.
She died from the injury shortly afterward.
The incident, which was first reported Wednesday, occurred back in November.
