Gossip Girl fans, rejoice! The cult classic is getting a reboot.
There has been a lot of speculation on whether the CW hit show would come back to television, and today it has been confirmed that it is. The Hollywood Reporter explains that the series, which follows the insane lives of New York socialites and “Upper East Siders,” will be airing on HBO Max in the spring of 2020.
There are very few details of what to expect of the upcoming 10 episodes, but fans should know that the series is in good hands as Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz – the OG creators – will be returning. Also returning to write and executive produce will be former showrunner, Joshua Safran.
Although Safran is a little hush-hush about what to expect, he does explain that the show will be an extension of the original. “Eight years after the original went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years.”
He adds, “It’s just a new look at this particular society in New York, the idea being that society changes constantly. So how has this world changed, how has social media and its effects changed? All of those things allow us to look at the world 12 years on as opposed to just redoing the story. None of us are interested in just redoing a story.”
There is no word yet on if series regulars Penn Badgley, Chase Crawford, Ed Westwick, Leighton Meester, and of course, Blake Lively will be part of the show.
This is a huge land for the streaming service, HBO Max. The platform will launch with 10,000 hours of content including Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Pretty Little Liars, Game of Thrones, and other content from networks like Warner Bros., HBO, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and TBS.
