A Supreme Court decision was made yesterday, making a provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This protects LBGTQ workers who now cannot be fired based on sexual orientation.
Under the Title VII bar, women and men cannot be treated differently at the workplace. Now that includes everyone in the LGBTQ community.
The ruling states, "An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex.”
The dissent was made by Justices Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh.
Alito said, “The Court tries to convince readers that it is merely enforcing the terms of the statute, but that is preposterous. Even as understood today, the concept of discrimination because of ‘s ex’ is different from discrimination because of ‘sexual orientation’ or ‘gender identity.’”
