Doctor Erases $650K of Patients’ Debt
About 200 cancer patients are ringing in the New Year with a great gift: forgiven debt.
Oncologist Dr. Omar Atiq erased around $650,000 worth of debt for 200 of his patients.
Atiq began working for a debt collection agency after closing his practice back in March. When he realized how hard it was for his patients to pay him back, he came to a conclusion.
Talking with Good Morning America, Atiq said, “Over time I realized that there are people who just are unable to pay. So my wife and I, as a family, we thought about it and looked at forgiving all the debt.”
Atiq’s former patients received a card during the holidays saying, “The clinic has decided to forego all balances owed to the clinic by its patients. Happy Holidays.”
