Mom Left Heartbroken After Baby Swallowed Button Battery
A Texas mother named Trista Hamsmith is opening up about a tragedy when she lost her 17-month-old daughter because of a battery. Her little girl Reese lost her life because she swallowed a button battery and she didn’t know. Her mother is now doing everything she can to make sure this doesn’t happen to any other children.
“Kids are dying,” Hamsmith, 39, told the “Today” show. “We’ve got to do everything we can to get this information to parents and put pressure on the industry to make changes to protect the kids.”
At first Reese started wheezing a lot so her mother took her to see the pediatrician. The doctor determined it was croup which is an airway infection. Hamsmith went home she noticed a button battery had gone missing from a remote control and she ran to the emergency room. After many tests it was confirmed that Reese had swallowed it and it unfortunately burned a hole in her esophagus.
After one surgery she still had issues and eventually was put on a feeding tube and later died.
“This story needs to be told,” Hamsmith added. “It didn’t have to happen.”
