New Florida Law Requires Students Learn How To Save Lives
A new Florida law requires high school students to take classes on how to provide a life-saving technique.
Signed into law, HB 157 states: “School districts are required to provide basic training in first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, for all students in grade 9 and grade 11.”
Florida Representative Fred Hawkins co-sponsored the bill. He said:
“It’s a one-hour nationally recognized CPR course in the public health sector of the school. So many people are afraid to act thinking they’ll do something wrong and Florida has laws to protect them, that’s the one thing that was asked during this whole committee process.”
The leading cause of death in the United States is “sudden cardiac arrest”, and the top killer of student-athletes, according to Parent Heart Watch.
Students will learn more than CPR methods. They’ll also learn the legal protections Floridians have when providing life-saving measures.
