Bees Are Not What We Thought They Were, So Say California
The world is in trouble with more animals and species becoming extinct. One of the most endangered species threatening extinction is the bumblebee, which don’t receive as much protection as they should. Well, one way to help out with this issue is to recategorize what a bee can be considered as. A ruling in California stated that bee’s can now legally be considered fish under specific circumstances. This ruling makes them eligible for greater protection from the Fish and Game Commission.
The California Endangered Species Act was designed to protect “native species or subspecies of a bird, mammal, fish, amphibian, reptile, or plant.” Notice how bee’s (invertebrates) are not on that list. But according to CNN, this sneaky loophole for insects and other spineless creatures defines a “fish” as a “mollusk, crustacean, invertebrate, amphibian, or part, spawn, or ovum of any of those animals.” Basically saying that bumblebees can now be eligible for listing under the California Endangered Species Act.
