Ellen Gilland is 76 years old, is facing 1st degree murder charges, and she has been denied bond after shooting her terminally ill husband in a Daytona hospital. Officers from the Daytona Beach Police Department were called to the hospital around 11:45am on Saturday. Both Ellen and her late husband Jerry had planned the shooting.
They found Gilland had shot a single round, killing her husband and had barricaded herself in the hospital room on the 11th floor. The hospital was immediately placed on lock down as hostage negotiators spoke with in hopes having her come out of the room. After nearly four hours police ended up deploying a flash bang grenade and a taser to finally end the standoff. They said she never posed a threat to anyone else and no patients or staff members were injured.
Ellen and Jerry planned that if Jerry’s condition did not improve she would take his life, also investigators think it was initially going to be a murder / suicide. Police say that the couple planned it for at least three weeks when Jerry’s condition worsened and treatment was not working. Daytona Police Chief Jakari Young said, “they had a conversation about it, and they actually planned this approximately three weeks ago that if he continued to take a turn for the worse,, that he wanted her to end this.
