Hurricane Ian moves toward Florida on September 28, 2022 in the Gulf of Mexico.

I guess if you’re a hurricane, it’s kind of like having your number retired in sports.

When a hurricane causes catastrophic damage or significant loss, the World Meteorological Organization steps in and removes that name from the alphabetical list. Hurricane Ian didn’t do too much damage to use here in the Tampa area, but Ian was a nightmare for so many of our Florida neighbors to our south. So the WMO has done away with the name Hurricane Ian forever.

In fact, two names this year were done away with. Ian and Fiona. So when the 2028 hurricane season rolls around, two new names have just been announced. Ian will be replaced by Idris. Fiona will become Farrah.
