Florida Is Now The Shark Attack Capital Of The World
Everyone knows that Florida is notoriously known for the most beautiful beaches in the United States. Now, those beaches are being recognized for being the most dangerous when it comes to sharks!
According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), 41 of 57 confirmed shark attack cases worldwide were reported in the United States. Out of those 41 cases, 16 were in Florida. This is the most attacks of any other state or any single place. The total number of shark attacks are down from the average 70 from the previous 5 years, but some are concerned that Volusia County. It has become the new shark hot spot where 44 percent of attacks have been recorded.
There is a some Silver lining when it comes to Florida and shark attacks. Of the five fatal bites recorded in 2022, none were registered in the state of Florida, but rather in Egypt, South Africa, and Hawaii. America is on pace to be the nation with most shark bites worldwide reporting 23 of 42 attacks this year. There also has already been 7 fatal attacks, but with 3 coming out of Australia and 2 from Egypt.
Other cities known for shark attacks:
New York has surprisingly been on high alert for shark attacks within the last couple of summers. Only a dozen unprovoked bites were recorded with just four people bitten within the last decade. It took the state of New York only 2 years to surpass those numbers. 8 people have reported being bitten by sharks swimming in the shallows off Long Island’s beaches in 2022. So far this year, there have already been 5 bites reported with the summer just beginning.
Though the facts seem scary to beachgoers, the upward trend in shark attacks is actually a positive sign for our ecosystem. An increase in shark sightings suggests cleaner water, allowing small fish that sharks feed on to flourish. More small fish swimming closer to shore means more sharks chasing them and getting closer to the shore and people.
