Thanks to WalletHub analyzing at all 50 states, we now know the best and the worst states to have a baby. Cost, health care, baby-friendliness and family-friendliness were the 4 key dimensions to determine this list.
Worst States
Florida made it to the bottom, but was not THE WORST on the list. The sunshine state actually beat out Nevada, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, West Virginia, Louisiana and South Carolina. One of the worst states, Alabama, was last when it came to health care. The WORST state was Mississippi due to the lack of family-friendliness.
Though it is disheartening to see Florida on the worst list, it is encouraging to see that we aren’t the worst. The cost of having a baby in Florida and Florida health care is ranked in the mid 40’s, which is what sank our rank as whole. Our states bright spots were in baby and family friendliness. So even though the health care and cost aren’t the best in Florida, it’s good to know you will be in good company when it comes to babies and family.
Best States
Rounding out the list of the best states are Washington, Connecticut, Utah, Iowa, New Hampshire, North Dakota and Rhode Island. Coming in at number 3 was Vermont. Though they had the number 1 ranked health care system, the New England state was held back for their baby-friendliness. At number 2, we have the state of Minnesota who were highlighted for their family-friendliness. However, there was one state that surpassed them and all other states. The best state to have a baby in is Massachusetts!
Even though the cost of having a baby in Massachusetts could be a bit pricey, the state has one of the best health care systems in the country. The Codfish state ranked in the top 5 for friendliness among babies. The category that set them above all, was family friendliness which was ranked the best in the Unites States.
Having a baby is both a joyful and stressful occasion, but hopefully this list helps you make it a lot easier.
