Lightning In Florida
Every thunderstorm experiences some lightning. In the state of Florida, there are 70 to 100 days a year that there is at least one thunderstorm. Tampa may be known as the "Lightning Capital Of The World", but there is one place on the planet that gets more lightning then anywhere else, and that is the Lake Victoria region of Africa. When it comes to deaths, Florida sees an average of 10 deaths a year. That is more than a third of the deaths in the United States!
How To Save Yourself Or Someone From Lightning
The best way to protect yourself and loved ones from lightning is to follow the saying "When thunder roars, go indoors!" according to the Center For Disease Control. The CDC suggests once you hear thunder, find a safe and enclosed shelter. Avoid open structures like sports arenas and porches. Also, stay away from open spaces and stay away from tall structures, such as trees or telephone poles since lightning tends to strike the tallest object around.
