When Thanksgiving rolls around, you can always anticipate a little chaos at the airports. If you plan on getting away, we share some insights on trends that have occurred over the last four years, deducting that these trends will be a good predictor of travel this year in 2023. And who knows what the weather will be like during that time of the year. That always throws an extra wrench in the works.
Amongst all the data gathered by NerdWallet, there was a big takeaway: over the recent four-year span, the Sunday after Thanksgiving was the busiest day to travel when compared to the seven days leading up to Thanksgiving and the seven days following Thanksgiving. If you want to be a little out of the box, avoid the crowds, and have the flexibility to do so, fly on Thanksgiving Day.
The day you REALLY want to avoid is the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It is the worst day around Thanksgiving and usually the worst (i.e., busiest) travel day of the year! Below are the three busiest days to travel, according to NerdWallet. Their full list ranks the days from most to least crowded using this four-year historical data.
1. Sunday after Thanksgiving (11/26)
2. Wednesday before Thanksgiving (11/22)
3. Friday before Thanksgiving (11/17)
Of course, during the holidays you’re going to be facing major crowds at the airports and on the roads. Luckily for us in Tampa, TPA is one of the best airports in the country. The Monday after Thanksgiving (Cyber Monday) is also a crazy day for traveling. The least busiest day for traveling around Thanksgiving is Thanksgiving Day itself (11/23).

And remember, the less crowded the airports are, theoretically, the cheaper the airfare will be. Flying on Thanksgiving would be your best bet, but if you have to get there before, fly out the Saturday or Monday before. Flying home will be easiest on the Wednesday after, Black Friday, or the Tuesday after.
