Swag Surfin in Church? This Hot New Trend In Churches Is Being Questioned
We all think it, but we will never admit it. Church isn’t the most fun place to go to, historically. I’m not sure if it’s the dressing up in your Sunday best or the fact that I’m hungover from sinning all day Saturday. I have never woken up on a Sunday excited to go to church. Well, that may change. A new modern trend is “surfing” its way into churches around the country, making some people look forward to swag Sundays and others questioning if it’s too much: swag surfin in church.
If you’re looking for a more progressive way to spend your Sunday, you may want to try Bishop William Murphy’s dReam Center Church. This Atlanta-based pastor has been the topic of conversation for the last week for his unconventional use of music during his services. Videos have been going viral on the internet of Murphy using songs like DJ Unk’s “Walk it Out” and Fast Life Yungstaz’s “Swag Surfin”, and people don’t know how to react to swag surfin in church.
On one side, people are praising Murphy for his modern way of thinking. They believe his song choices make him more relatable to the younger generations and add an exciting aspect to the service. On the other hand, most people think that the church is doing the most.
“It’s my conviction that when people walk into church, it should not be as if they walk into a foreign country,” Murphy told 11Alive. “That church should have some point of relativity where when people walk in they feel like ‘ok this does actually have something to do with my life.”
