“Woman walks free after strangling her baby to death and my listeners are angry.”  Im sure you became angry as well when reading the headline. This horrific incident happened in Indianapolis but it caught the attention of us here in St. Petersburg, Florida.  In 2023 Dacia Lacey was charged for causing her child’s death, but this week she was found not guilty!  When I talked about this on the radio, my listeners were very confused and angry. Why was she set free? You will find out the judges reasoning below.

In August of 2022, police in Indianapolis went to a home and found a 2-month-old girl unresponsive. Sadly the 2-month-old died on the scene. 5 month’s later, her mother Darcia Lacey was charged with killing her. According to reports, Darcia confessed to smothering her daughter to sleep because she was high on meth. She wanted the baby to stop crying so she could get some sleep. Darcia says the death was an accident and she did not intend to kill her child.

In the end, the judge did side with Darcia. Before announcing the verdict, Judge Mark Stoner told Darcia that she was a bad parent and that she was not innocent. He believed she was guilty of involuntary manslaughter, but since she was not initially charged with that crime he found her not guilty. Had Darcia been convicted, she would have spent 20 to 40 years behind bars. During the trial the judge also told prosecutors that they did not prove that Darcia intentionally harmed her daughter. He says the charged her with the wrong crime!

Which Florida City Made The List With Highest Murder Rates In U.S.

There’s lots to love about the Sunshine State, but we’re also notorious for the craziest crimes. One Florida city even ranked in the top 15 for highest murder rates in America. It’s not really a list we love to see Florida on, but we can’t say we’re not surprised with all the insane stuff that happens here.

Our friends at neighboorhoodscout.com ranked the top 30 cities in the country with the highest murder rates per 1,000 residents. They condensed their research by including cities with 25,000 or more people. They collected their data by the number of murders reported to the FBI to have occurred in each city, and the population of each city. The city population data comes straight from the US Bureau of the Census at the time of each analysis. For instance, the 2022 list population uses 2020 population figures. The 2021 list uses 2019 figures, and so forth.

There were 14 new cities making the list this year. “The newcomer on this list with the highest murder rate is Saginaw, MI. The number of murders in Saginaw more than doubled from the previous year.” Thankfully (and surprisingly) only one Florida city was ranked in the research.
