Loud Noises & Jump Scares Make “A Quiet Place: Day One” Scariest One Yet
Usually whenever you sit down for a movie, right before the film plays, a message pops up on the screen asking you to shut off your phone and be quiet. Well, the advanced screening I went to tonight gave that message new meaning. Tonight, I watched one of my favorite franchises for edge of your seat vibes, A Quiet Place: Day One.
I really enjoyed seeing the first two movies that were directed by John Krasinski. This third installment, however, had a different director, Michael Sarnoski and instead of Emily Blunt starring, this time it was Academy Award winning Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther, Us) alongside, Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things, Fantastic 4). The movie follows these new characters in a prequel to its predecessor, in the city of New York as they navigate through an alien invasion that suddenly occurred. These creatures are blind but can see through sound, their supersonic hearing can pick up the slightest sound you make and come running to attack whoever disturbs their silence.
The pacing of the film was good, I feel it starts off very quickly, same as the last two films, however, there is a bit of a drag towards the end. It was bearable because I really allowed both Nyong’o and Quinn to shine and showed that it wasn’t just another jump out your seat thriller. Both actors performances were very solid, you really feel sympathy for what Nyong’o’s character goes through and the bond her and Quinn share on screen is very heartfelt.
My only gripe is the same one I’ve had with the other films before it. Where are these aliens coming from? And how does everyone (in this third film) automatically know how to keep quiet, so they don’t get attacked? How are they communicating this to one another after these creatures just attacked them? I hope in the next film they explore a side of what the government knows or knew about the aliens and the attacks on the planet.
Overall, the movie was good and entertaining, I jumped out of my seat multiple times, and I scored it at a 7 out of 10. A Quiet Place: Day One hits theaters June 27th.
