This Florida City Had 2 Shark Attacks In 24 Hours
The state of Florida is known for many things. Good and bad. For example, Florida is the best state for higher education and economy. On the other hand, Florida is also the worst state for Shark attacks. The Sunshine State has had so many attacks that we have been named the Shark capital of the world for back-to-back consecutive years. After this weekend we might have the title for 3 years in a row because one city in Florida had 2 shark attacks in 24 hours.
Shark Attack Details
New Smyrna Beach wasn’t just busy with people this 4th of July weekend. They had their fair share of sharks as well. The first incident happened on Independence Day around 4 pm. A man located around Flagler Avenue was playing football in knee-deep water when a shark bit him in the foot. Luckily the injuries were not life-threatening.
The second incident happened 24 hours later. Just like the first incident, it happened in the 4 o’clock hour. Around 4:15 pm, a 26-year-old man was in his inner tube hanging out in approximately 5 feet of water when he was also bit in the foot. This injury was also non-life threatening.
Though the number of shark attacks in the US has gone down from 41 in 2022 to 36 in 2023, the frequency of shark bites in Florida has not decreased. Out of those 41 cases, 16 were in Florida. This is the most attacks of any other state or any single place. According to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File, Volusia County has become the new shark hot spot where 44 percent of attacks have been recorded. Since they started recording attacks in 1882, Volusia County has accounted for 351 attacks, which is more than double than any other county.
So just a couple of pointers if you’re trying to avoid sharks. 1, don’t go swimming around 4 pm in New Smyrna Beach. If possible, stay away from swimming in Volusia County.
