When I first heard about this story, I did not think it was real. “Florida woman traveled to Vermont because she wanted to die.” This story however is very real, and some people travel to Vermont to choose how they want to end there lives . Have you heard of the “Death With Dignity” act that was passed? I live in St. Petersburg and we do not have that in Florida. They do in Vermont and It is a law that allows people who have fewer than 6 months to live to end there lives with medical assistance.

According to deathwithdignity.org, Death with Dignity is an end-of-life option, governed by state legislation, that allows certain people with terminal illness to voluntarily and legally request and receive a prescription medication from their physician to hasten their death in a peaceful, humane, and dignified manner. “Death With Dignity” is currently legal in 10 states. Out of the 10 states Vermont and Oregon are the only two where you don’t have to be a resident to qualify.
Florida woman, Rita Mannebach who had a terminal lung disease decided that Vermont was where she wanted die. Mannebach flew from Orlando to Burlington with her husband and other family members weeks before her death. She got there weeks early so that she could transfer her hospice care from Florida to Vermont and meet with doctors. Before a patient is prescribed with life ending medication, a doctor has to confirm that they are mentally sound and have met all of the law’s requirements. The patient has to make to verbal request to a doctor for the drugs 15 days apart and provide a written request in front of two or more witnesses.
Two days before she took the medication an 84 year old Mannebach told “Seven Days” reporters that she was not afraid. She was surrounded by family and according to her brother, her passing was peaceful and moving.
