New Study Shows Money Can Buy You Happiness
Turns out we were lied to our entire lives. We have all heard it before. The phrase “Money can’t buy you happiness”. We were led to believe it was true, but science has recently proven the statement wrong. Man can actually buy you happiness.
The Study
According to a new study by Matt Killingsworth and the University of Pennsylvania, there is a connection between money and happiness. By examining over 30,000 employed adults and ultra-wealthy individuals, Killingsworth’s research showed that wealthier people tend to report significantly higher life satisfaction compared to middle- and low-income individuals.
Killingsworth’s data also suggests that the disparity in happiness is larger among those with very high incomes compared to those earning just over $500,000 annually. One key insight from the research is that the feeling of control over one’s life plays a major role in this association. Killingsworth believes that money’s impact on happiness is not just about purchasing power but also about the freedom and control it provides.
Killingsworth told The Guardian “Ironically, part of the reason I’m so interested in happiness is because money alone – which we’re already pretty motivated to pursue – is just one small part of the overall equation for happiness. So part of the reason I study happiness is to broaden our horizons beyond things like money.”
So even though money can, in fact, buy you happiness, Killingsworth wants you to know there are other factors that play a role as well. Even though the happiness threshold starts at about $75,000 a year, you should be focusing on other ways to make you happy than just money. However, you better believe my conversations are going to be different. When someone tries to tell me “Money can’t buy you happiness” now, I’m going to answer back “But I’ve never seen someone crying in a Lambo.” with confidence knowing I have science supporting me.
