Do Florida Residents Know About This Driving Law?
Do Florida Residents know about this driving law? Im asking this question because it is a law that I see drivers breaking everyday. Honestly it’s one that I have broken as well because I’m just now finding out about it. I live in St. Petersburg and everyday I take I-275 North to work. When I see disabled vehicles or police on the side of the highway, I move over lanes. I do this as a courtesy but I had no idea that it was a must. Did you know that you could be fined for breaking this law?
Florida Has A “Move Over Law” Has Expanded To 2024
In 2022 alone there were 170 crashes and more than 14K tickets issued for drivers who failed to move over in Florida. Just know when you fail to move over for vehicles on the side of the road, you are putting their safety at risk. This is why the move over law (HB 425) was created. This law requires drivers to get out of lanes that are closest to stopped vehicles. At first the only vehicles you had to move over for included utility trucks, police cars, ambulances etc.
This law has expanded and now drivers will have to provide space when any disabled vehicles are stopped along roads with people visible or that have warning lights on. If you cannot move over, you are required to go 20MPH lower than the posted speed limit. If you violate this law and are caught, you can receive a fine of up to $158 for a noncriminal traffic infraction.
Guess which group is most likely to break the law? According to statistics, drivers aged 20-40. According to the Florida Highway Safety And Motor Vehicles, this group is less likely to move over or slow down when they approach emergency, service or disabled vehicles.
