A new chapter in Tampa Bay water transit starts as Hubbard's Marina wins the bid to run cross-bay ferry trips between Tampa and St. Petersburg. The service kicks off summer 2026, marking a fresh start for bay area transport.
Two boats will join the fleet through a $5 million federal grant, now under PSTA control after its switch from Hillsborough transit. The boats will run year-round, a first for the area, under the straightforward name Tampa Bay Ferry.
"We're very blessed and very honored," said Captain Dylan Hubbard, according to Bay News 9. "And looking forward to our relationship with PSTA growing and the relationship with our cities, Tampa, Saint Pete and the local transportation boards. It's definitely an exciting time."
The previous service hit rough waters in April 2025. HMS Ferries tried switching to a slower vessel, doubling crossing times. This breach led county officials to cut ties.
Water runs deep in Hubbard family history. From their Madeira Beach base, they've spent years running boats across Tampa Bay waters, building trust with locals who need rides or want to fish.
Yet hurdles remain. The plan needs green lights from both city councils on Nov. 6. PSTA makes its final call on Dec. 3.
Success hinges on a five-year deal between the cities and PSTA. This pact would secure a stable water link connecting both downtown areas.
The wheels started turning last May when federal transport officials backed the grant transfer to PSTA. Now plans move full steam ahead for next summer's launch.
