Speakeasy’s are becoming a popular trend in the Tampa Bay area. Just a few years ago, there was maybe only 1-2 to choose from, now they’re hidden all over the place. No pun intended. A new speakeasy and bakery in Ybor is taking over the scene. This place is great to check out for a ladies night, romantic evening with your boo, or brunch on the weekends. Not only do they have the best vibes in Ybor city, but they are also recognizing a very big part of Tampa’s Black History.

Roast is the newest bakery to hit the streets of Ybor. Behind their bookcase lives Madame Fortune. This has quickly become one of the best speakeasy in Tampa. Babs even celebrated her birthday there this year and they were so accommodating for all of our unexpected guests. They share the password to get in on their social media every week. Check out their “Password” story highlight. The food at Madame Fortune is insanely good, packed with strong southern and West Indian influences. We tried a bunch of different things on their menu. So far our favorites are the Sweet Potato Corn Bread with Hot Honey, and Pepperpot made with braised oxtail, roasted veggies, pigeon peas and rice.

Madame Fortune is actually ode to the woman who was essential in creating the city of Tampa. Her name was Madame Fortune Taylor. When she gained her freedom from being enslaved, she and her husband moved to Tampa after the civil war. Her husband, Ben Taylor, was a farmer who grew guavas, oranges, and peaches, according to News Channel 8. Which is also why you may find those ingredients sprinkled in the menu at Madame Fortune. The speakeasy allows her spirit to live on.

This is the must-see speakeasy in Tampa Bay. Check out our photos from our experience at Madam Fortune for Babs’ birthday party
