If you’ve never experienced a movie showing during Tampa Theatre’s “Nightmare On Franklin Street” series, make a point to check one of these classic scary flicks this weekend. The old (and supposedly haunted) theater is dimly lit, creating the perfect mood for a few screams. Plus it’s a rare chance to see many of these old films on the big screen for the first time in decades. Here are my 5 best picks for this Halloween weekend.

• The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog

  This 1927 Alfred Hitchcock classic is about a landlady and her husband’s renter. Is he a killer? For this special Friday night event, see this one the way they saw it back then. Steven Ball, Tampa Theatre’s organist extraordinaire, will score the film live on their Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. Tickets are $14.50 for general admission. But if you’re a Tampa Theatre member, you get in for $11.50.

• The Haunted Mansion

  Eddie Murphy plays Jim Evers in the fourth feature film to be based on a Disney theme park attraction. See this one Saturday at 11am. Tickets are $10 for general admission. But if you’re a Tampa Theatre member, you get in for $7.

• The Addams Family

   

  On Saturday night, you can keep the credit card in your wallet. And don’t head to Tampa Theatre for this one. This free family screening is happening at Curtis Hixon Park.

• Ghostbusters

  Who ya gonna call? The 80s classic with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Sigourney Weaver will have a 2:30pm showing Saturday. Can you believe it’s been 40 years since this one came out? Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for members.

• Halloween

  They saved the best for last. The 1978 classic was written in 10 days! On Halloween night in 1963, young Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister. But while being transferred for a court date years later, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for members. It starts at 7:30pm Halloween night! Not in Tampa? John Carpenter’s masterpiece is also playing at Studio Movie Grill – Seminole and the Polk in Lakeland.
