LOS ANGELES, CA - AUGUST 30: Vanguard Award winner Kanye West speaks onstage during the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards at Microsoft Theater on August 30, 2015 in Los Angeles, California.

Kanye fans who stayed up past midnight to listen to the rapper’s upcoming album, Donda 2, were extremely disappointed when he didn’t release it.

Last week, Ye announced that the sequel to Donda would only be available through his device and platform Stem Player. The $200 device racked up the rapper $2.2 million after that announcement, according to West (per Hypebeast).

“To earn the $2.2 million we made on the first day on the stem player the album would have had to stream 500 million times,” he wrote on Instagram. “We did more revenue on stemplayer, without the album even being out, than we would have done with the album being out on streaming.”

Ye pulled a similar act in 2016 when he exclusively released The Life of Pablo on Tidal and urged fans to sign up for the streaming service in which he is part owner. Fans remain hopeful that Ye will drop his album sometime this month or in the near future although he is notorious for not dropping on the promised date.
