Florida resident’s, do you often wonder how many sex offenders live near you? Treasure Coast News has data that gives the amount of registered sex offenders in each county. I live in St. Petersburg which is in Pinellas County. Pinellas County has the 4th highest amount of sex offenders in the state of Florida.
Dictionary.Law says a sex offender is a “term for all persons convicted of crimes involving sex, including rape, molestation, sexual harassment and pornography production or distribution. In most states convicted sex offenders are supposed to report to local police authorities, but many do not.”
Sadly there are still so many people who don’t report sexual abusers. According to the Department of Health and Human services, “there are over 60 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse in America. As many as 90% of those survivors never report their abuse to law enforcement, and more than 30% will never report their abuse to anyone.”
90% is a lot of victims who don’t report their abuse. To think that there are so many people walking around who have not been brought to justice, is scary. I moved to Florida alone, and Im glad I have my concealed weapons permit. Yes, you no longer need it, but a lot of us have it.
I pray that the sex offenders living amongst us don’t repeat their awful acts. Hopefully they are rehabilitated and have learned to be better citizens. If you know someone who has been sexually abused and they are afraid to speak up, please be a voice for them.
Below are 5 counties with the highest amount of sex offenders including the county with the most. Are you shocked by this list, or are you not surprised? Remember, stay safe and always be aware of your surroundings.
