Summer Safety Tips4 Ways To Stay Safe As You BBQ This Summer

Written by Geno Knight

The beauty of living in Florida is we get to grill year round.  Nothing beats the flavor of perfectly-prepared burgers, steak, sausage and hot dogs on the grill. But the day can go downhill fast if a fire gets out of control.  Here are four tips to avoid a visit from the fire department at your cookout.

  1. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby: It might not make your steak on the grill taste any better, but if the fire gets out of control, you want to be able to take care of it fast.
  2. Check for leaks: One out of every 5 grill fires are due to leaks.  Simple soap and water can quickly help you find the trouble before it ruins your BBQ.
  3. The 10 foot rule: Keep that grill far away from the house.  Employ the 10 feet rule.  Nothing should be within a few steps from your grill.
  4. Drinking and grilling: You know drinking and driving is a bad mix.  The same goes for grilling.  Enjoy a cold one after you’re done doing the cooking.
