I love Soul food. When I was a little girl my grandmother would cook it for me and my sister all the time. Soul food is an ethnic meal traditionally prepared and eaten by African Americans.  Now it’s a meal loved by all races and ethnicities around the world.

My favorite has to be fried chicken, rice, black eyed peas and collard greens.  It’s Black history month, and I wanted to put together a list of the best soul food restaurants in Florida. Did I miss any? Feel free to email me at Babs@wild941.com.

• Farmers Market Restaurant

  Florida Native and NFL Hall Of Famer Deion Sanders Says Farmers Market has some of the best soul food he’s ever tasted. He is from Fort Myers and says every time he goes home he has to stop by this restaurant. For 70 years Farmers market has been making home made collard greens,  fried chicken, meatloaf,  and sweet potato pies. They have many great pies and its a must try if you go.

• Big John’s Eatery

  Big Johns Eatery is located in West Palm Beach and they create some of the best comfort cooking. The owners took inspiration from the meals they cook in their own home. Many people who have eaten there say to try the oxtails and grits! This is a meal that customers want and can get all day.  One of the owners is Haitian and the other is Panamanian. So the dishes also have Caribbean flavor.

• Happy Soul

  Happy Soul is located in Palmetto and is specifically for vegans who crave soul food.  My sister has gone here and says they have a really good barbecue jackfruit . Also they have a great friend mushroom wrap! The sweet potato fries and Vegan Mac-and-cheese are also great.

• The Potter's House Soul Food Bistro

  Potters house has two locations in Jacksonville and they stay busy. Their setup Is cafeteria style and patrons say their smothered pork chops are some of the best in the state. If you get a chance to stop by you should also try their delicious mac-and-cheese. Make sure you leave room for desert! Check out Potters house hummingbird cake and the sweet potato pie.

• Josiah's Southern Cooking

  Joshiah’s Southern Cooking is located in Panama City. Their signature dish is fried Pork Chops. The owner Sharolyn Gaines makes the chops with love especially since there is a secret recipe for the batter that she coats them with. Oxtails and Fried fish are also popular at Josiahs Southern Kitchen. This restaurant will give you the feel of eating your grandmothers cooking.
