Coming in September, a sing-along movie series will be shown on Sundays in historic Tampa Theatre.

The Tampa Theatre began their sing-alongs back in February 2002. There was a national release of a sing-along “The Sound of Music.” The novelty of the event sold out its two-week run. Similar results came in 2014 when a sold-out sing-along “Mary Poppins” led to Disney asking if there wasn’t some sort of typo in a report.

The Summer Classics Movie Series has hosted the “Grease” sing-along, which has become a favorite. This has led to the creation of the September Sing-Along Sundays series.

Tampa Theatre has announced the lineup for the 2023 September Sing-Along Sundays series. Films begin each Sunday at 3 p.m. This year will feature a couple of returning favorites, plus two new additions. There will also be a special guest.

Tampa Theatre also encourages costumes. General Admission tickets are $14.50. For Tampa Theatre members, $11.50. Purchase tickets at the theater’s box office or at tampatheatre.org.

The theater was built in 1926 by Paramount Pictures. It became one of the most elaborate theaters in America, and is one of Tampa’s most recognizable landmarks. However, in the 1950’s and 60’s, when television began to grow and people moved to the suburbs, audiences decreased while costs rose.

By the 1970’s, Tampa Theatre was facing the same fate as many other theaters in U.S.A., but Tampa’s community leaders and the City of Tampa found a way to save the historic building.

In 1978, Tampa Theatre was named to the National Registry of Historic Places. Today, when visitors enter the theatre, they’ll enjoy the landmark’s unique features, including the twinkling stars in the ceiling, Mediterranean courtyard, statues and old style gargoyles.
