Like a lot of different states, Florida is falling on some hard times. Not all states but plenty of them have an above average percentage of people that are living in poverty. It could be because they’re out of work, or not making the salary they should be. With so much going on in the world and dealing with income inequality around the country, it hard to ignore some poverty around us. RoadSnacks did some researched and looked at places in each state that are struggling due to economy issues. Some areas continue to improve but others are still falling behind. They analyzed the newest Census data and compared 221 cities in Florida with more than 5,000 people.

Why Are These Florida Cities The Poorest:

It seems like things are just getting more and more expensive every year. It’s important to save as much money as you can so you can retire one day! That’s just another reason why so many people are moving to the state of Florida. Not every city in Florida is the same when it comes to finances and taxes. Below are the top five poorest places in Florida you might want to avoid moving to if you’re looking for a new job.

First and foremost, Florida is home to stunning beaches but that doesn’t mean these areas are doing well economically. There’s over 1,350 miles of coastline with pristine white sand, turquoise water, and extremely hot weather. One of the most famous places is Miami Beach to the very glamorous South Beach each one is amazing in it’s own way. Those areas are not listed on the poorest in the state of Florida. Most of them are actually in the middle of the state and not near a coastline featuring expensive houses. Scroll below to see who made the list!

  • 1. Pahokee

    Pahokee sadly ranks as the poorest place in Florida. Mainly because there’s not a lot of options for jobs and low paying jobs. The city has a population size of 6,286 and averages the 5th lowest median household income in Florida.

    Median Income: $30,180 – Which is the 5th lowest
    Unemployment Rate: 23.8% – They have the highest
    Poverty Rate: 37.6% – They have the 3rd highest

  • 2. Belle Glade

    The second poorest city in Florida is Belle Glade and has the 4th lowest median household income.

    Median Income: $28,028 – 4th lowest
    Unemployment Rate: 13.3% – 6th highest
    Poverty Rate: 40.2% – 2nd highest

  • 3. Opa-Locka

    Coming in at #3 for the poorest city we have the Opa-Locka with a population size of 16,000. This city went down one this year and now ranks #3.

  • 4. Avon Park

  • 5. Sebring

    Sebring now ranks #6 in the state of Florida as the poorest city and has a population size of 10,400. The poverty rate is 26% making it the 16th highest in the state.
