This Florida County is the most at risk for a natural disaster. I live in St. Petersburg which is in Pinellas County. Thank goodness Pinellas County is not the county that is most at risk for a natural disaster. According to the National centers for Environmental Information, over the past five years, the U.S. has experienced an average of 17.8 natural disasters each year.

Some of those areas are more prone to these disasters than other areas. The states with the most natural disasters are the coastal states. For instance, states like California, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Florida are all states that have been mostly affected by natural disasters since 2013.

I have personally been affected by 2 natural disasters

For 8th grade, I lived in California and we were staying with my uncle. His house, unfortunately, was burned down because of the wildfires, and he lost everything. I felt so bad but thank goodness the community came together and fundraised.

Fast forward to me living in Florida and there is a hurricane at least once a year. When I lived in Fort Myers which is in Lee County, my apartment got flooded after In Fort Myers after Hurricane Irma. I was upset at the time because a lot of my things were ruined. Now looking back, I’m just happy to be alive.

This Florida County Is The Most At Risk For A Natural Disaster

Now to determine the counties that were most at risk for natural disasters,  Forbes Advisor uncovered the number of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster declarations over the past decade for the 200 most populated counties.

I’m shocked that this particular county in Florida is the most at risk in Florida. I thought it would be counties that were more north or south. Below are 5 United States counties that are most at risk for a natural disaster. I have also included the Florida county that is most at risk for a natural disaster.

  • Los Angeles County, California

    Los Angeles County comes in at number one for the U.S. county most at risk for a natural disaster. This county has declared 22 natural disasters in the past decade. This includes mudslides, flooding, 20 fires and two instances of severe winter storms.

  • East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana

    East Baton Rouge Parish is the 2nd county that is most at risk for natural disasters. This county has had 17 disaster declarations over the past decade. Between January 2013 and January 2023, East Baton Rouge Parish experienced 3 coastal storms, two floods, two severe ice storms and 10 hurricanes.

  • Orleans Parish, Louisiana

    Orleans Parish has tied with East Baton Rouge as the 2nd U.S. county that is  most at risk for natural disaster. Over the past decade, Orleans Parish has declared 17 weather disasters, 3 coastal storms, two severe ice storms, one tornado and 11 hurricanes.

  • Riverside County, California

    Riverside county is next on this list with 16 disaster declarations over the past decade. Riverside County has experienced 13 fires, two floods and one severe storm in the past decade.

    Jefferson Parish tied with Riverside County and had 16 declared disasters, 3 coastal storms, 2 severe ice storms and 11 hurricanes.

  • Duval County, Florida

    Duval County comes in at number 9 for the u.s. county most at risk for a natural disaster. Duval County is also the Florida county that is most at risk for a natural disaster. Duval county has had 12 declared disasters. Over the past decade this county has experienced 10 hurricanes.
