Salt-N-Pepa was a group that set the tone for women MCs. The rap trio was composed of Salt (Cheryl James), Pepa (Sandra Denton), and DJ Spinerella (Deidra Roper). The group was formed in 1985 in Queens, New York. They released their hit “Push It” in 1987. It blew up the airwaves as it hit No. 1 in three countries. The song also garnered a Grammy nomination for “Best Rap Performance” at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards. Shortly after the success of “Push It,” they released their debut album Cool & Vicious. It sold over one million copies and made them the first women rappers to receive gold and platinum status by the RIAA.
Their fourth album Very Necessary made them icons. It sold over 7 million copies which crowned them the highest-selling women rap act in history at the time. This year, the album celebrates its 30th anniversary. Very Necessary had tracks such as “Shoop,” “Whattaman” featuring En Vogue, and “None Of Your Business.”
In total, the group has been nominated for five Grammys, winning one for “Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group” at the 37th Grammy Awards for “None Of Your Business.” In 2021, the group received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Life After Music
After their music success, the two ventured off into television. Salt-N-Pepa had a reality show on VH1 in 2008 where cameras followed the hip-hop icons around as they reminisced about old times and how they live their lives now after their breakup. The show was titled The Salt-N-Pepa Show and it lasted two seasons on the network. Additionally Pepa was a supporting cast member on Growing Up Hip Hop in 2016 where her daughter Egypt was one of main cast members.
