Florida Ranked As A Top State For College Rivalries
As we get deeper into the college football season, we come upon the part of the schedule that features major rivalries, with many of these matchups happening towards the end of the year. In addition, college basketball is about to tipoff. To prepare for this most exciting time in sports (where all major sports are playing simultaneously), Saturday Down South detailed the biggest rivalry in college sports, and Florida schools ranked towards the top.
What goes into a great college rivalry? For some schools, it’s all about squaring off against another major program from a bordering state. Usually, each of these schools has had success in recent years. This only intensifies the battles and bragging rights. Think the New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox, but applicable to the colleges.
Florida vs. Florida State Ranked #10
“This rivalry peaked with Steve Spurrier and Bobby Bowden in the 1990s, wherein half of the national championships involved the winner of this game,” Saturday Down South states.
Deion Sanders, Charlie Ward, and Warrick Dunn are just some of the legendary names to come out of the Florida State football program. In Gainesville, the Gators claim Tim Tebow, Emmitt Smith, and Anthony Richardson, to name a few.
The Seminoles have three national championship titles, with the most recent coming off the 2013 season with Jameis Winston. However, the Gators also have three titles. Their most recent was in 2008 during the Tebow era.
Though football seems to take center stage with this biggest rivalry in Florida, don’t sleep on their basketball history. In fact, the two teams will square off soon, with their first battle coming on November 17. The football matchup is still to come as well. That will take place about a week later at the University of Florida on November 25.
Though Florida vs. Florida State ranked as the biggest rivalry in the state for college sports, the Gators had another shout-out in Saturdays Down South feature. Oddly enough, it was not against the University of Miami. Florida vs. Georgia ranked #6.
