Couple Charged for Hosting Bat Mitzvah Party
A New Jersey couple is facing criminal charges after they violated self-distancing orders by hosting a bat mitzvah party.
Lakewood residents Eliezer and Miriam Silber, 37 and 34, were each charged with five counts of child endangerment late Sunday night after police found “40 to 50” guests in their front yard, according to an incident report. The charges represent one for each of their five children, police say. Eliezer Silber was also charged with violating a rule adopted by the governor, according to police.
Despite backlash for ruining the bat mitzvah, Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer says he stands behind the decision to press charges against the couple. “My office will prosecute any individual who defies or breaks the law, state of emergency or otherwise,” he says. “Everyone must respect and follow the law.”
