Orlando & The Freakshow

We must have listened to these songs a million times growing up. Our parents constantly played these massive hits as we envisioned what the singer looked like in our head. Well, guess what? We were today years old when we found out that these huge songs weren’t sung by Black singers at all. Even with their soulful, robust voices most of these hits were done by White or Spanish artists. After watching their videos on YouTube, our minds were blown when we realized these songs weren’t sung by the people we initially thought. According to TheRoot, these are many artists we mistakenly thought Black people sang.

Great Songs We Thought Black People Sang:

There are several examples of iconic songs that we never knew were sung by Black people. One of the most famous is definitely Bobby Caldwell with his hit ‘What You Won’t Do For Love’ song. His label TK Records was a very popular R&B label having many Black fans and listeners. TK intentionally hid Caldwell’s race and never showed his face or showed he looked at all even on his album. Fans found out eventually though once he went out on tour. He went on tour with Natalie Cole to promote his album and that’s when the world discovered he was in fact white.

It never mattered what race they were whenever we heard any of these artists songs but it is interesting how we initially thought these following singers were Black. Some of them listed below might even shock you! Check out the list below of the nine songs we thought Black people sang.
