Autism Spectrum Disorder: If You’re Concerned

You should contact your doctor’s child, if you think there might be a problem with your child as in the way they play, learn, speaks or acts and you think there might a possibility that they may have an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The CDC has stated that your doctor will help you decide if there is some concern and if there is, your doctor will give you a referral to a specialist who evaluate your child more in-depth. These specialist will be able to make a diagnosis that includes:

  • Developmental Pediatricians (doctors who have special training in child development and children with special needs)

  • Child Neurologists (doctors who work on the brain, spine, and nerves)

  • Child Psychologists or Psychiatrists (doctors who know about the human mind)

It’s a good idea to be proactive, by calling your state’s public early childhood system to request a free evaluation to find out if your child qualifies for intervention services. This service can be called Child Find evaluation. The convenient thing about this is that you do not need to wait for a doctor’s referral or a medical diagnosis to make this call.

Here’s where to call for a free evaluation from the state depending on your child’s age:

If your child is not yet 3 years old, contact your local early intervention system.

If your child is 3 years old or older, you can contact your local public school system. Even if your child is not yet old enough for kindergarten or enrolled in a public school, call your local elementary school or board of education and ask to speak with someone who can assist with having your child evaluated.

Research has shown that early intervention services can greatly improve a child’s development. Keep in mind that it is very important to get help for your child as soon as possible so that they may reach their full potential.
