Bebe Rexha Discusses Size Discrimination And The Pressure To Be Thin
Bebe Rexha is on the October cover of Cosmopolitan magazine, and in the issue, she gets candid about some hot topics, including the pressure to be thin, and even size discrimination in the fashion world.
She explains to Cosmopolitan, “When I first got signed, the label said, ‘Are you ready to get in boot-camp shape?’ They wanted me to lose 20lbs. Back then I was so small, I was only 130lbs. It f—ed me up… I would starve myself before filming a music video.”
She also brings up the issue she addressed earlier this year dealing with designers saying she was too big to fit into their dresses for the Grammys. She explains, “It broke my heart. I was so sad, so depressed. I felt like I was garbage. I thought to myself, ‘This is bulls—.’ I was mad. I wasn’t trying to get back at anyone, but I wasn’t standing for it anymore.”

Rexha also talks about her experience working with Dr. Luke, who had a discrimination suit filed against him by Kesha. She says, “I remember being at a dinner party with [Kesha and her mother, Pebe Sebert]. Her mom came up to me and whispered, ‘Don’t do it.'”
She also adds, “There was one night. I was alone in the studio and a [different] producer has a group of fixe or six guys with him. I had heard things about him from his past and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I felt like I was going to get raped. I quietly called myself a taxi from the recording booth, which was enclosed, and I got the f— out of there. It was the worst night ever.”
When talking about new music, she explains that her next album will be out next year. She also promises that the collection will address insecurities she’s dealt with since she was a child.
The issue of Cosmopolitan hits stands on Thursday.
