Tampa Bay’s Love Bugs: How To Clean Them Off Your Car

If your car has become covered with our seasonal “friends,” then perhaps you need to know a way to remove love bugs without damaging your ride.

It’s the second of our two annual love bug seasons. The Tampa Bay area gets to see them a couple of times each year. Once, before we hit summer, usually around April and May. Then the second, in August and September. According to the University of Florida, though they are a nuisance to our vehicles, they are an important part of our ecosystem. They are known to distribute beneficial nutrients into the ground.

As we go through love bug season, many cars seem to collect them on their grills, hoods and windshields. If you let them set for too long, they can damage the wax and/or paint job. There is a simple way to get them off your car.

You’ll recognize these culprits that are damaging the paint on our cars.

How to remove love bugs:

What do you do when you’ve squished enough of these little critters while on the road? Cleaning them off is actually much easier than you’d think. All you need is a dryer sheet. Yes, you read that correctly. A common dryer sheet. Here’s how you do it.

Just take the dryer sheet. Any brand. Wet your car wherever the bugs are and wet the dryer sheet. Place the sheet over the bugs for a moment, then you can wipe them away. It’s really that simple. Rinse, and the bugs should be gone!

Once love bug season is over, take the time to stash aside some dryer sheets for next season. Don’t use any non-stick sprays on your car. It will damage the paint. Do wax your car, that will help protect your paint.
