New York Inspired Breakfast Spot Opens In Tampa
There are so many incredible breakfast-specific meals from pancakes to omelets. However, this new breakfast spot in Tampa crafts its menu around one of the most popular hand-held items you love to eat early in the morning.
Bacon Egg’n Cheese is a food truck restaurant that is now open in downtown Tampa. They describe themselves as an establishment that cooks up “Authentic New York-style breakfast sandwiches.” However, in a popular Instagram post they shared last month, they also gave a nod to a New Jersey specialty.
It’s described as a pork roll-based sandwich, but as someone who grew up in New Jersey, and grew up on these breakfast delights, there are a few things you need to know.
With all due respect, the better name is a Taylor Ham sandwich. In New Jersey, although technically it is pork roll, you never hear an enthusiast or popular deli call it anything other than Taylor Ham. It’s one of the most popular breakfast sandwiches in the tri-state, northeast region, for a significant reason.
Put aside the fact that it’s not necessarily the healthiest item in the world. Hey, it is delicious! The Taylor Ham is grilled, usually to the point where one side (at least) has a bit of a charred look to it. Then, you add your egg and American cheese. If it’s prepared right, the cheese will melt atop the ham. Adding eggs (just like you would add bacon, egg, and cheese) gives it an extra kick and, of course, provides the protein. However, ordering just a Taylor Ham and Cheese sandwich is perfectly reasonable and common.
Here’s another important point about this breakfast item done correctly. You will notice that at this new Tampa food truck, the sandwich is usually served on a round roll. Now, it’s still delicious and fine to order on a bagel, but the round roll is the traditional element that takes it to another level. If you really want it to be authentic New Jersey-style (or New York), it’s wrapped and handed to you in tinfoil.
As someone who seeks this out every time I return to New Jersey for a visit, I can tell you adding some salt and pepper also enhances the experience. Many also include a dash of ketchup.
Now that I’ve set the table and hyped up how awesome these sandwiches are, let’s look a little deeper into the menu that Bacon Egg’n Cheese offers. Highlights include a Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese with a hash brown sandwich and an avocado bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich.
That’s So Tampa also detailed the Hungry Man, which is “eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, home fries and cheese on a roll.”
This new Bacon Egg’n Cheese food truck is located at 411 N Florida Ave in Tampa. They also have a spot in Brandon at 3410 S Kings Ave.
