These Florida Cities Are Breaking Temperature Records
Summer is almost here, as Summer Solstice officially happens on June 20, and boy, does it feel like it. This week is going to bring record-breaking temperatures to many areas of Florida and across America. Sure, we’re used to the heat in Florida. But, some Florida cities are actually breaking temperature records, according to weather experts, which you don’t see too often.
Florida Cities That Are Breaking Temperature Records
Before we get into the Florida cites that are breaking temperature records, it’s worth noting that if you live in or travel to Florida in the summer, you should be aware of things to do to stay cool. Even without record-breaking temperatures, it gets hot in Florida, so be smart and take some precautions to stay safe. Being in hot weather can be very dangerous. It’s not something to mess around with, either. According to the experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hot weather can be deadly. “High temperatures kill hundreds of people every year,” they state. “Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet more than 700 people die from extreme heat every year in the United States.” They add that one thing you can do to help protect yourself is to drink a lot of water. When it’s hot outside and the humidity is high, humans’ sweat won’t evaporate as quickly, they point out. So, your body isn’t able to release heat fast enough. Drinking a lot of water helps. I’m actually drinking a bottle of water right now. The CDC also recommends to stay inside in an air-conditioned area, don’t rely on a fan to cool down during an extreme heat event, check with neighbors and relatives to make sure they’re doing well and limit your use of the stove and oven. Also, avoid outdoor activities, especially working out in super hot weather or playing sports. Take cool showers and baths, too. Finally, don’t ever leave pets, children or elderly people in cars in this weather. Nobody should be sitting in a hot car in 90-plus degree temperatures.
So, which Florida cities are breaking temperature records? Tampa, Florida, broke a record on Sunday (June 16). According to the experts at CNN, on Sunday, Tampa hit 96 degrees, which was “a record for this calendar day.” It’s not over, either. On Wednesday (June 19), CNN projects that Tampa will once again either hit or eclipse its previous record temperature of 95, which was set in 2009. Also, going back to earlier in the season, NBCMiami.com states that Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Key West all broke temperature records last month. I absolutely love summer and usually say that it can never get too hot, but this is too hot for me. I’ll be staying inside until the evening, when temperatures hopefully drop.
