If You Live In St. Pete, Your Publix Might Be Getting Demolished
Everyone loves Publix. If you ask anyone in Tampa Bay, Publix is the overall favorite spot for groceries, Pub-Subs, and lotto tickets. But for some shoppers in Pinellas County, you may need to find a new place to shop … but only temporarily. One St. Pete Publix set to be demolished is going to be making way for a new, modern rebuild.
On July 27th, demolition begins at one of the most iconic supermarket buildings in St. Pete at 3900 66th Street North, which is now a Publix. But, it wasn’t always a Publix.
The History Of The 66th St. N. St. Pete Publix Set To Be Demolished
The building was originally built in 1976 and became the third Albertsons location in the St. Pete Area. But, in 2008 after a a deal went through for Publix to buy up 49 Florida Albertson locations, this location was set to be part of that deal.
A short 2 months later in November of 2008, Publix had done a light remodel to change over from the previous colors of Albertsons. Fast forward to 2011 and Publix takes this 66th Street location through a full remodel.
With the current layout of the store, Publix decided it was time to move on from the Albertsons Era inside layout.
St. Pete Publix Set To Be Demolished: What Will The Remodel Look Like?
Like many of the new Publix locations across Florida, there are going to be major changes to the store exterior and inside layouts. Bringing the store into the new age, the inside will look similar to the newer Publix designs.
With the current building permits under review with the City, the St. Pete Publix set to be demolished will get a complete rebuild. It will be a Publix Food & Pharmacy with a separate Liquor store on the lot.
The project is projected to cost about $10.5 million. The new Publix at 66th St. N will increase from 56, 565 sqft to 57,554. They will have a total of 241 parking spaces to accommodate the new build.
Unfortunately, if this St. Pete Publix set to be demolished is your go-to shopping spot, you’ll have to find a new Publix temporarily. The good news is that there are multiple Publix close by.
As of right now, there is no confirmed re-opening date for this store.
