Top 5 Cities Tampa Locals Are Considering Moving To Post-Hurricanes
This may not apply to everyone in the Tampa Bay area, but I’m sure a lot of people are reconsidering their recent move to Tampa after a rough hurricane season with back-to-back major storms. Even some Florida natives have said they’ve had enough and are thinking about relocating. A recent thread in the Tampa Reddit page was filled with hundreds of comments on people’s next move from Tampa. Whether it’s relocating to somewhere more inland in Florida, or forgetting the Sunshine State altogether, here’s where Tampa locals are moving to after Hurricane Milton and Helene.
I’m sure many people that have lived in Tampa their whole lives are happy to hear that these hurricane’s are scaring away transplants. “Hoping people leave so I can finally afford a house” writes one Reddit user. But even some who are born and raised here say that the cost of homes/insurance, influx of traffic, and stress from hurricanes is finally starting to have them reconsider other options.
One piece of advice that stood out for Floridians looking to flee is if they’re considering a place up north to spend some time there during the middle of winter to see if they can handle it. And no matter where you move, there’s always some type of trade off to deal with. Snowstorms, earthquakes, mudslides, flash flooding.. Sometimes the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
Here Are The Top 5 Trending Cities Where Tampa Locals Are Considering Moving To
These are the main cities we’ve seen tossed around a lot when it comes to Tampa locals relocating. Some people in the Tampa Reddit thread even mentioned staying in Florida moving more inland to somewhere like Winter Garden, Ocala, even Tallahassee. Others have considered the complete opposite and what to move to the Pacific North West like Oregon or Washington. But the most common cities we’ve seen on this reddit thread are:
- Nashville – Why not follow our former Lightning captain Steven Stamkos? Nashville has a similar party-type environment like Tampa, plenty of live music and things to do, plus we hear the winters aren’t TOO brutal within the city.
- Atlanta – I personally know a handful of people who made the move from FL to ATL and are loving it. But that doesn’t speak for everyone.
- Denver – A LOT of people from the Tampa area have moved to Denver, they even have Tampa Bay Lightning groups/watch parties in some areas. But it’s only one to consider if you like winter, at least you can participate in fun winter sports unlike the Midwest where you’d likely be sitting at home.
- Philadelphia – This is where that winter tip will come in handy. If you can’t handle Philly during it’s coldest months (Dec-Feb), you’ll probably find yourself moving back to Florida after 1 winter.
- Charlotte – Up until Helene, I think a lot of people considered moving to western North Carolina. Somewhere a little more central in the state may feel like a “safer” move.
Floridians should know that just because there will be a large number of people looking to leave doesn’t necessarily mean things will “go back to normal”. Hurricanes are not stopping people from moving to Florida. Look at Ft. Myers after Ian for example, the demand is definitely still there and hurricanes are just apart of the Florida package.
