Florida Brushing Scam on the Rise This Holiday Season
So, the holidays are here, and while you’re thinking about getting that perfect gift or maybe sending out some presents, there’s a new scam that might just surprise you in your mailbox. According to NBC2, It’s called a “brushing scam,” and it’s something you definitely want to avoid. Here’s how it works: you get a package at your door. The catch? You didn’t order a thing. That’s right. No purchase, no tracking, but there it is.
At first, you might think, “Well, this is a nice surprise!” But hold up. Turns out, this scam isn’t just about weird gifts; it’s about your info. Some shady companies are sending out random items just so they can leave a positive review for their products using your name. It sounds bizarre, but it helps boost their ratings online, which is all they care about.
Brushing Scam Alert:
But the real danger shows up when the scammers take it a step further. Some packages come with a QR code. You might think it’s just part of a promotion or something, but if you scan it, you’re headed straight to a phishing site. That site could then grab your personal information from your phone. This puts your accounts, passwords, and everything else at risk. Not fun, right?
So what should you do if you think you’re dealing with a brushing scam? First off, don’t pay for the package. You didn’t ask for it, so just send it back. Mark it “return to sender.” After that, reach out to the retailer listed on the package and let them know what’s going on. Keep an eye on your credit reports for any strange activity. And, if you have an account with the retailer, go ahead and change your password just to be safe. Be carful, the brushing scam is getting more and more common.
Bottom line: don’t let these scammers ruin your holidays. If you need help, give the Punta Gorda Police a call at 941-639-4111.
