Video: Air Taxi Closer To Happening In Tampa Bay
It’s time for taxis, and also services such as Uber and Lyft, to take a look at what happened at Tampa International Airport on Thursday morning. An ‘air taxi’ was tested for the first time in Florida.
What does that mean? It’s a step closer to offering a ride in the air to someplace local. The beaches, downtown areas, just about anywhere in the Tampa Bay area will be accessible from the air.
It’s not quite what we saw on the Jetsons, but the future of air travel may be coming a little closer. They’re known as eVTOLs. That stands for electric vertical take-off and landing. Picture a helicopter that resembles a large drone.
In fact, take a look below at this video:

Thsi new option for travel is designed for short and medium-range flights. In 2019, Fox 13 reported that Uber was planning an air taxi service. So far, that has not made its way to the Tampa Bay area.
Meanwhile, German manufacturer Volocopter has been testing their aircraft in multiple states, including Texas and Nevada. The Tampa test marks the latest step in creating local transportation that has a minimal carbon footprint.
In 2022, Tampa International Airport posted a video featuring Brett Fay, Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Director of General Aviation. He explained that this is real, and it’s going to happen in the next few years.
Volocopter, a developer of urban air mobility (UAM), expects to have the VoloCity operating in 2024. We’ll still wait to learn when these flights will begin in the Tampa Bay area. There’s no word yet on the cost of flights.
