‘Barbie’ Set A New Box Office Record
RYAN GOSLING as Ken and MARGOT ROBBIE as Barbie in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “BARBIE,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer made their theatrical debuts this weekend. And it looks like the former is making history. Despite the highly-anticipated films being part of the social media-driven Barbenheimer double-feature, Barbie is the one that came out on top at the box office. Per Variety, Gerwig’s Barbie earned $155 million in its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman. The title was previously held by 2019’s Captain Marvel, which was co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck at $153 million in 2019. Holding the title prior to that was 2017’s Patty Jenkins-directed Wonder Woman, raking in $103 million.
Barbie Breaking Records
On top of the record-breaking opening, Barbie also earned the biggest opening weekend of the year, beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $146 million. Rounding out 2023’s top five highest-earning opening weekend so far are Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Little Mermaid, and Avatar: The Way of Water. In advance screenings alone on Thursday, Barbie made $22.4 million, while Oppenheimer made $10.5 million.

We knew the Barbie movie was going to be iconic the moment the behind-the-scenes photos were leaked online last June. Since then, the hype surrounding the movie has increased tenfold. Margot Robbie stars as the titular character and she has been recreating outfits inspired by the actual doll during the press tour, having our jaws drop every time. “Barbiecore” is the theme of 2023 and we hope that it will last, because Barbie pink and recreating the doll’s looks are so fun to try in your own wardrobe! Because every Barbie girl must have some beautiful Barbie-inspired things.
To incorporate “Barbiecore” in your wardrobe other than having shades of pink, sparkles, feathers, and hyper-feminine cuts are another fun way to channel your inner Barbie for those who are more bold. The trend has been very much alive in the 90s and early 2000s, with elements from those decades incorporated in modern looks.
Barbie comes out in theaters on Friday, July 21. Starring alongside Robbie is Ryan Gosling as Ken. He’s been in character as well, serving that “” that we’re all here for. The rest of the cast includes Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, John Cena, and more. The movie’s soundtrack is just as star-studded, featuring tracks from Charli XCX, Tame Impala, Ice Spice, Lizzo, Pinkpantheress, The Kid LAROI, and Haim.
