The ‘iCarly’ Reboot Is Soon Approaching Paramount Plus
Paramount+ has tapped Nickelodeon TV series, iCarly for a reboot this summer, Refinery29 reports.
Following in the same footsteps of Raven’s Home, Fuller House, and Peacock’s Punky Brewster: Lately, there’s been a trend of sequels featuring the lovable young characters from family-friendly sitcoms, now seen years down the line. And the new iCarly is no exception to this, reuniting fans with the ever-chaotic energy of Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) and her friends — “but with a relatable millennial edge.”
Paramount+ will produce the revamped series which will focus on the life of OG influencer Carly Shay (Cosgrove). Now a twenty-something with years of fame under her belt, Carly has grown up quite a bit and is now facing a slew of new problems related to her love life and her career as an internet personality in an over-saturated industry. She’s got the support of her older brother Spencer (Jerry Trainor) and best friend Freddie (Nathan Kress) by her side.
Best friend Sam (Jeannette McCurdy) is noticeably missing from the teaser above, and that’s because she elected not to rejoin her cast mates on the reboot. Earlier this year, McCurdy revealed that she had retired from acting because of lingering trauma from being a child star. She said, “I quit a few years ago because I initially didn’t want to do it. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was… cheesy, embarrassing.”
Though Sam won’t be on the show, new characters will be introduced like Harper, played by Laci Mosley, Carly’s roommate and best friend, and Millicent, played by Jaidyn Triplett, as Freddie’s stepdaughter.
New episodes of iCarly will stream on Paramount+ on June 17.
The original iCarly series blew up social media when the first two seasons was made available to stream on Netflix earlier this year. The series enjoyed a regular spot on the streaming service’s list of Top 10 most-viewed titles for at least a month, but there are six seasons and nearly 100 episodes in total. If you’ve never watched the original iCarly, the series follows a trio of teenagers: Carly, her best friend, tough girl Sam and geeky boy-next-door Freddie, who start a web show that skyrockets to popularity. They deal with internet rivalries, petty bloggers, figuring out what content to make, and scheming ways to get more viewers, alongside the usual tween-show issues, like navigating crushes and mean teachers.
