Florida Man Had To Get Part Of His Arm Amputated After Getting Bit By An Alligator
A Florida man had to get part of his arm amputated after getting bit by an alligator. Sources are saying this is an extremely rare attack that happened at Lake Monroe. Lake Monroe is about 3 hours from where I live in St. Petersburg. How did the victim encounter the alligator? He was swimming in the lake right before getting bit. The man says he was experiencing homelessness at the time.

A witness who was in the area at the time told Fox News, “we were driving back home and passed by a guy, basically laying on his side and covered in blood. He was missing his arm from here; you could see his bone and all the flesh coming out of it. I just ran over. There was one little towel that he had, so i took it, covered his arm with it, and squeezed it till the paramedics got there.” The Florida Wildlife Commission said the man was taken to a nearby hospital following the attack, where he had part of his arm amputated.
When I talked about this on the radio we got into the discussion of alligator attacks in Florida and how often they happen. According to the FWC, Alligator conflicts are rare in Florida and the likelihood of a resident being seriously injured during an unprovoked incident is one in 3.1M. I choose not to swim in lakes or go near lakes where alligators may be. In college there were several alligators spotted roaming around my college campus. I am so glad I was always cautious and never had any encounters with them.
