She Was the First Mail Carrier In Tampa Bay
Happy Holidays! A big thank you to all the delivery drivers and mail carriers who make our holidays a success! With that being said I live “Herstory” which means history about women! “She was the first woman mail carrier in Tampa.” I live in St. Petersburg which is in the area and I would have loved to meet her.
Betty Howard Was the First Female Mail Carrier in Tampa Bay Area
Tampa Times did an article in 1968 and according to the publication, Howard served as the city of Tampa’s first woman mail carrier. Her Granddaughters had no idea because Howard never spoke of her achievement. One of her Granddaughters told Abc action news, “It’s crazy to me because it’s such a big achievement to not know,”
Her Granddaughters find it ironic that they found out about it after she died in 2011. One of her granddaughters goes on to say “She was always late. I don’t know how her postal carrier was in those days, but in the time when we were around her, it was like ‘always late! I just was proud. You know I felt proud. Like, I can’t believe she didn’t—like I didn’t know, you know? Now I wish I could talk to her about it and find out more.”
Have You Ever Found Out Something Interesting About Your Family Members?
It’s interesting the ways we found out things about our family members. During one of my family reunions, I found out that one of my relatives was the secretary to the great Fredrick Douglas.
Is there something that you ever found out about your family members that was shocking? I want to hear your story, feel free to email me Babs@wild941.com. The email will be totally confidential.
Happy holidays and I hope you are having a great time spending it with family and friends.
