This Florida Lake Has The Highest Population Of Alligators And You Should Avoid Swimming In It
I grew up in Michigan and have great memories of hanging out and swimming in the lakes during the summer. I currently live in St. Petersburg, Florida and have yet to swim in a lake and its because of the alligators! Explore.com, is telling us about a Florida Lake we should avoid swimming in because it has the highest population of alligators.
Avoid Swimming In This Dangerous Florida Lake
Lake Okeechobee is the largest lake in Florida and according to reports it is very polluted. Why? The main reason is agricultural pollution from fertilizer and pesticide runoff which carries nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. As these nutrients get into the water it strengthens eutrophication. Eutrophication leads to the depletion of oxygen in the water. It also stimulates algae and cyanobacteria growth called algal blooms.
The algal blooms are swirling patches of slimy blue and green algae which can spread over half of lake Okeechobee’s total surface. Swimming in this can cause very serious health issues. Algal blooms are very common in Lake Okeechobee and that’s why there are always swim advisories from The Florida Department of Health cautioning against swimming in it.
Lake Okeechobee Has The Highest Population Of Alligators
According to data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for annual alligator harvest, Lake Okeechobee has the highest population of alligators in Florida. Back in 2022 there were 638 Alligators living in this lake. It makes sence, because gators love shallow waters. Yes, Okeechobee is large in size, but it is only nine feet deep. Apparently Bull sharks have been spotted in Lake Okeechobee as well. Please be careful and listen to the swim advisories. There is always that one person or group of people who want to go viral.
