Study: Smoking Weed Protects Binge Drinkers From Liver Disease
It turns out mixing one’s vices might not be so bad after all.
A new study claims smoking weed can protect binge drinkers from developing potentially fatal liver disease.
Conducted by the North Shore Medical Center in Massachusetts, the study says marijuana’s anti-inflammatory properties can also “significantly lower the odds” of contracting cirrhosis and even liver cancer. However, the healing effect of weed seems to slightly increase when combined with alcohol, researchers have found.
However, researchers warn their conclusions could be a bit premature. They don’t know which chemicals in marijuana are responsible for the positive impact on the liver, nor do they know how the people they studied ingested the weed. So another study is underway.
“My research group is currently working to discover which cannabinoids or cannabinoid formulations will provide the best therapeutic benefits for specific liver diseases,” says Dr. Adeyinka Charles Adejumo, the lead researcher.
